Design Thinking Philosophy

Our take on Design Thinking

Design thinking as an approach has evolved in the last few years as a key tool for solving problems that requires out of the ordinary approach/solution. Analysis of data can lead you to where the problem is, but design thinking will help identifying why there is a problem.

Simple problems have a clear cut problem statement and their answers are quite definitive. But wicked problems differ right at the outset. They have multiple layers of problems involving multiple stakeholders with their interests, host of systems and processes intertwined thus adding complexity to the situation.

We believe Design Thinking will help identify the root cause of such wicked problems. Wicked problems exist in every domain thus making Design Thinking a life skill.

What exactly then Design Thinking is? Is it a problem solving technique? Or is it a mindset? Drawing learning from Eastern (mind) and Western (brain) philosophy, we feel it's a mindset to solve problems.

And preparing the design mind first before approaching a problem is, therefore, a must and necessary part of adapting Design Thinking Mindset change involves focusing on the learning styles of an individual and empathy quotient.

Learning is an action or a movement always in the present, without conformity to the past. Learning is not listening with one’s knowledge. If you listen with knowledge, with what you have learned, then actually you are not listening; you are interpreting; you are comparing, judging, evaluating, conforming to a certain pattern that has been established. The act of listening is entirely different; it is when you are listening with complete attention in which there is no sense of conformity to a pattern, no comparison, evaluation, or interpretation – you are listeningJ Krishnamurti

From our experience of leveraging design and design thinking as a deep differentiator, there are several critical aspects identified as important for preparing the desing mind.

What makes School of Design Thinking unique is our belief in the indispensability of a Design Mind. Our conviction lies in shaping the thinking process of an individual before the application of Design Thinking. This sentiment is reflected in our host of programs where we keep the Design Mind as the starting point in the journey of Design Thinking. To put in the wise words of Lord Buddha," The mind is everything. What you think you become." We @ School of Design Thinking have identified those crucial elements which work on human mind & are inevitable for preparing a Design Mind. When we speak about the application of Design Thinking, our Design Practitioners have carefully crafted a 5-Step Design Thinking process©.

This process with the support of variety of Design Tools will ensure the solution of any wicked problem.

The UnMukt Mindset

Have you noticed that birds, unlike the animal species are not seen fighting for space? A herd of migratory birds that have travelled miles from a distant location are perfectly at ease with local birds. A crow and a parrot perch harmoniously on branches of the same tree.

On the other hand, Human beings and other animal species alike are territorial. We don't find harmonious sharing of space among these life forms. The reason for this is perhaps that birds unlike human beings and animals, operate in 3 dimensions. The coexistence of birds comes from their innate characteristic to look at the space around themselves in a different way. For them, the world is truly "boundary less".

School of Design Thinking is inspired to achieve this Boundary less thinking as seen in birds. The Sanskrit meaning of word UnMukt is unrestricted thinking knowing no boundaries.
